PR and Communications Specialist

This role acts as a strategic communications business partner to multiple assigned functions, responsible for planning, developing and executing comprehensive internal and external communications strategies that enhance the Company’s brand, reputation and engagement. In this role, the Specialist, Public Relations and Communications will serve as a brand journalist, crafting stories that inspire, inform and captivate various audiences, including team members, traditional and social media, B2B customers and B2C store guests.

Here’s what you’ll do:

Public Relations

  • Lead the planning and execution of media relations activities and events, providing guidance to junior communications staff, agency partners and other departments and acting as project manager when needed.

  • Provide thoughtful partnership and lead creative PR and social media campaigns that drive awareness and traffic for our Retail segment.

  • Build relationships with media contacts, pitch stories and manage responses to inquiries to secure positive coverage.

  • Monitor effectiveness of PR campaigns through metrics (UVM, followers, sales, etc.), making adjustments to tactics and strategy to drive results.

  • Provide intensive crisis communications support as the need arises.

Project & Campaign Management

  • Collaborate with a variety of internal business partners and departments throughout SpartanNash on the development and delivery of content, acting as a project lead to develop strong communications campaigns and effective messaging across an omni-channel environment.

  • Serve as strategic advisor to the business in deploying messages so they reach the right audience in the right channel at the right time.

  • Develop, implement and evaluate multi-channel communication plans (email, intranet, social media, press) that align with Company goals, brand and culture.

Internal Communications & Planning

  • Serve as consultant and advocate to the business on SpartanNash's communication platforms, including SpartanNash Go; email, including SpartanNash Flash and Communications Center; Green Galleries; digital boards; and more.

  • Produce high-quality, compelling content, including press releases, media alerts, talking points and articles, tailored to diverse audiences to deliver results both internally and externally.

  • Routinely conduct information gathering, content drafting and approval, and video/design support for a variety of channels and audiences.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Take on additional responsibilities as assigned or as the business needs evolve.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required) in Communication, Journalism, English, Business Administration or related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in communications and/or related experience.

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience with Microsoft SharePoint, an email platform such as Workshop and Adobe Photoshop preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong writing, proofing, editing, and word processing skills. · Work with minimal supervision to craft high-level messaging, manage complex projects, and act as a liaison between leadership, departments and external stakeholders.

  • Manage external agency partners.

  • Proven ability to work in high pressure situations and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling and consistent messages.

  • Self-directed, highly motivated, creative and attentive to detail.

  • Skilled in managing a wide range of activities and multiple projects under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to effectively use office automation/communication software and tools currently used in the office environment, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, task management software, and Office 365.

Travel Requirements

  • Willingness to travel, including overnight stays, up to 20% depending on business needs.
