Job Description:

Position Summary

This role is responsible to support and assist the SpartanNash retail locations to maintain compliance with the food safety and regulatory requirements of the Food Code, USDA/COOL, local, state and federal authorities and that of SpartanNash. Key responsibilities include food safety audits, training, collaboration within SpartanNash and regulatory authorities.

This travel-oriented role will support a region of company-owned retail stores, primarily located in OH.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct food safety audits that are in alignment with the Food Code, USDA/COOL, regulatory agencies/authorities and SpartanNash requirements on a routine cadence.

  • Identify potential food safety hazards and areas of non-compliance and provide necessary guidance/support to mitigate risk.

  • Prepare and present (if needed) detailed audit reports outlining findings and recommendations.

  • Teach food safety certification classes that meet state and national food code requirements for company and independent retail associates.

  • Provide food safety support and training to retail store teams and independent, as necessary. Present at meetings to relay food safety practices to associates.

  • Work shoulder to shoulder with regulators and associates to ensure safe food handling practices and regulations are met in retail stores.

  • Maintain and update as necessary company Food Safety Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Stay updated on the latest food safety standards and practices.

  • Investigate customer complaints/food safety concerns at the store level.

  • Provide support and follow up of corrective actions for internal food safety audits and regulatory inspections.

  • Assist as needed with special project and requests

  • Track and report performance with compliance to the appropriate audience on a routine cadence.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science, food service, business or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience

  • Experience in a retail food regulatory environment preferred.

  • Previous audit experience.

  • Knowledge of FDA Food Code.

  • Knowledge of food safety practices, regulatory guidelines and HACCP requirements.

  • Advanced food safety certification such as Serv Safe, HACCP and Seafood HACCP, PCQI, NRFSP preferred.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.

  • Must be able to multi-task and have good follow-through to meet deadlines.

  • Must have good adaptability, ability to work under pressure, and attention to detail.

  • Have good leadership and training skills; ability to work with all levels of management and line associates.

  • Ability to travel up to 50% overnight and work flexible hours based on business needs.

While performing the duties of this position, the associate is subject to a typical office environment and is rarely exposed to outside weather conditions. Temperatures may vary for those subject to any of the following areas: computer/server room, print shop, production area). The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate but may be high in distribution settings. Travel requirements vary by assignment.
