Corporate Responsibility

Caring for our communities and environment.

Sounds like SpartanNash.

SpartanNash Foundation Formed in 2015, the SpartanNash Foundation provides grants to nonprofit partners in the communities we serve. In 2017, we granted more than $1.5 million to community nonprofit organizations. Outreach includes providing hunger relief, securing shelter and supporting our military heroes. We also are deeply committed to continuing our 34-year partnership with Special Olympics. To date, we have donated nearly $9.7 million and thousands of volunteer hours to Special Olympics in addition to providing meals for Summer Games volunteers. Check out our annual corporate responsibility report for details.

Involvement

Volunteering

In 2017, SpartanNash challenged our associates to collectively contribute at least 30,000 volunteer hours and exceeded that goal by 36 percent with 41,016 volunteer hours. Our goal for 2018 is 60,000 hours.

Retail Scan Campaigns

Throughout the year, the SpartanNash Foundation invites the communities it serves to join us in supporting key initiatives through a retail scan, whereby store guests have the opportunity to donate at the checkout register. In 2017, we raised and granted more than $1 million for Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics, as well as patriotic and food pantry partners.

Double Up Food Bucks

This program enables Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants to earn free produce when they buy fresh fruits and vegetables with their SNAP benefit.

Food Donations

5.5 million pounds of food are donated annually to food banks and pantries to feed families in need – and to divert the food from landfills.

Events

We also support events such as fireworks, parades, youth development teams and fundraiser walks, runs, relays and bike races.

Environmental Efforts

Earth Week

Through our annual Earth Week programs, we engage and educate our customers, communities and associates while promoting environmental stewardship. Since 2011, our Goodwill Donation Drive has resulted in 630,740 pounds of materials diverted from landfills to Goodwill, who then turns the donations into approximately 135,098 hours of workforce development training.

Corporate Responsibility

Our corporate responsibility dashboard includes company-wide initiatives to reduce waste and energy consumption to minimize our carbon footprint. From LEED buildings to lighting and refrigeration systems, our business decisions are driven by their impact on the environment.
